Hi all

I haven't posted for a while but constantly am on the site. I have recently been referred for trigger finger release surgery. During my consultation the surgeon did xrays and confirmed for me that I have extensive damage to my hand joints which require surgery to replace joints.

several questions emerge........................

1. why haven't rheumy team told me surgery was needed despite their recognition that my joints showed damage?
2. at what point do I opt to have it done - is it better sooner than later?
3. how do I select a well rated surgeon
4. is there a cut off age for surgery to be offered...................... and many more

I'm sure amongst you all - someone has been through this. any advice gladly received

thanks

Jane.

There's an old saying. 'A person with a hammer sees everything as a nail.'

Medics will tend to favour non surgical solutions, surgeons will tend to favour surgical solutions. Both will have your best interest at heart, but with a natural bias to their discipline. Which route is best depends on so many factors. Have you tried discussing the surgeon's recommendations with the rheumy team to get their view? That might be a useful approach?

Hexham - Northumberland - Loads of spectacular walks - all I need now are the joints to go with them! :)

Paul - have tried that with Rheumie team - they are non-commital but I take your point about what each favours!

GP said ask surgeon for success stories to contact - but he cant put me in touch, as it's against data protection. I wonder why GP didn't know that?

thanks Jane - I will investigate.BigGrin
